The visitor entrance
The entrance to the Vatican Museums is on Viale Vaticano, 00165 Rome, on the northern side of the walls of Vatican City. St. Peter’s Square and the basilica are on the other side, about 15 to 20 minutes away on foot around the walls. Visitors with a standard museum ticket who head to the square lose time walking back.
Guided tours and hosted entry services often meet at their own address nearby. Your booking instructions are the reference for where and when to meet.
By metro
Metro Line A has two convenient stations:
- Ottaviano: walk along Via Ottaviano and then follow the walls to Viale Vaticano, around 10 minutes.
- Cipro: walk down Via Cipro towards the walls, around 10 minutes.
Line A connects with Termini, the main railway station, and runs through central stops such as Spagna. Check current service and any works with the Rome transport operator (opens in a new tab).
By bus and tram
Several bus lines stop close to the museums, and line 49 stops near the entrance. Other lines and tram 19 reach Piazza del Risorgimento, a short walk away. Routes change from time to time, so check a journey planner before you travel.
By taxi or on foot
Taxis can drop you on Viale Vaticano or at Piazza del Risorgimento. Use official licensed taxis from ranks or a recognised app. From the historic centre, walking takes roughly 25 to 40 minutes depending on your starting point, often crossing the Tiber near Castel Sant’Angelo.
Arrival tips
- Arrive with enough time for the walk, any voucher exchange and security before your slot.
- Follow the arrival time in your instructions, as tours often ask you to arrive earlier than the start.
- Save the address offline, since mobile signal can be weak when the area is busy.
- Ignore people on the street offering to sell you tickets or tours. Your booking already covers entry.
Before you go, check opening hours and the dress code. If you have not booked yet, start with the fast track ticket or a guided tour.
