The short answer

Choose this tour if you want a guided itinerary that covers all three main sites. The basilica visit depends on access on the day, and the dome, the Vatican Gardens and the Scavi are not included.

The three parts of the tour

1. The Vatican Museums

The tour starts with a guided route through the museums. Expect highlights such as the classical sculpture of the Pio Clementino, the Gallery of Maps and, depending on the route, the Raphael Rooms. The guide chooses the order based on crowds and closures.

2. The Sistine Chapel

Your guide explains Michelangelo’s ceiling and the Last Judgment before you enter, because silence is expected inside and photography is not allowed. You then spend time in the chapel at the end of the museum section. Read more in our Sistine Chapel guide.

3. St. Peter’s Basilica

After the chapel, the itinerary continues to St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the largest churches in the world. Inside you can see Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s bronze baldachin over the papal altar. The guide explains the building and its history.

What the basilica visit does not include

Mentioning the basilica does not mean every space connected to it is part of the tour. Unless the booking page states otherwise, these are not included:

  • The dome. Climbing the dome has its own access and ticket.
  • The Vatican Gardens. Visited only on dedicated tours.
  • The Scavi and the necropolis. The excavations under the basilica, including the area associated with the tomb of St. Peter, require a separate booking process. Do not treat them as part of this tour because of a general marketing line.

How access to the basilica works

St. Peter’s Basilica is an active church. It can close fully or partly for religious celebrations, papal events and other operational reasons. The route between the Sistine Chapel and the basilica, and the order of the visit, can also change on the day.

Because of this, the conditions of your specific product decide what happens if the basilica is closed. Read them before booking. Do not expect to bypass security checks: the guide follows the route that is open, and all visitors go through the required checks.

Dress code matters even more here. The basilica applies strict rules on covered shoulders and knees. See our dress code guide.

Who this tour suits

  • Visitors with one day at the Vatican who want the museums, the chapel and the basilica in a single plan.
  • First time visitors who want a guide to connect the three sites.

If the basilica is not a priority, the standard guided tour covers the museums and the chapel. If you want to see the basilica on your own time, you can also visit it separately after a fast track ticket.

Compare with the alternatives

This is the only option in our comparison where the basilica is part of the guided itinerary for every booking. The Vatican City Pass includes a basilica visit option, but the format depends on the configuration you choose.

Practical advice

  • Travel light. Items left in the museum cloakroom must be collected there. A tour that continues to the basilica may not return to the museum entrance, so a small bag avoids a long walk back.
  • Check religious events. Before your date, look for announcements of celebrations at St. Peter’s that might affect access.
  • Meeting point. Follow your booking instructions. Tours often meet near the museums, not at the entrance itself.
  • Plan the dome separately. If you want to climb it, leave extra time and energy after the tour.

Cancellation and changes

The product page we reviewed listed this ticket as nonrefundable, and rescheduling was not possible. Conditions can differ between options, so read the terms shown on the booking page before you pay.

Visitor rules such as the dress code and security checks are set by the Vatican Museums and apply whatever you book. Ticket conditions, meeting points and refunds are set by the booking provider for the specific product.

Frequently asked questions

Is the dome climb included?

No. A visit to St. Peter’s Basilica does not include the dome. The dome has its own access and ticket. Check the booking page if you want to add it, and plan extra time and energy for the stairs.

Does the tour include the tomb of St. Peter or the Scavi?

No. The Scavi excavations and the necropolis under the basilica are a separate visit with their own booking process. Do not assume they are part of this tour because the basilica is included.

What happens if the basilica is closed?

St. Peter’s Basilica can close or limit access for religious celebrations and other events. In that case the itinerary may change. The conditions of your specific product explain what applies, so read them before booking.

Can I skip security at the basilica?

Do not expect to bypass security. Access routes and checks are decided on site and can change. Your guide follows the route that is open on the day, and all visitors go through the required checks.

Should I use the museum cloakroom on this tour?

Travel light if you can. Items left in the museum cloakroom must be collected there, and a tour that continues into the basilica may not return to the museum entrance. A small bag avoids the problem.

How is this different from the standard guided tour?

Both cover the museums and the Sistine Chapel with a guide for around 3 hours. This tour adds St. Peter’s Basilica to the itinerary, subject to access. The standard guided tour ends with the museums.
